Ali G - Playoff Rings

TNT and the NBA were brilliant enough to have Ali G star in the adverts promoting the 2008 NBA Championships. Here are some of my favorites that I don't recall seeing at the time.

TIME: Michael Jackson's Songs and You

In the above click, Time interviews regular people on the street about their thoughts on MJ's songs and passing.

Nowhere did the news spread faster than in cyberspace; get a load of some of these stats from Yahoo! (borrowed from Silicon Alley Insider):

  1. Y! News reached 16.4m UV's in a day, beating out the previous record of 15.1 from election day.
  2. Hourly record of 4m visitors between 3 and 4pm Fri PST
  3. Y!'s front page story on MJ's passing was highest clicking story in Y! history, generating 800k clicks within 10 minutes

Why all the buzz? Obviously the man was larger than life, not only because of his music but because of his numerous eccentricities. True, there was definitely a time when he went off the deep end a little bit and only a few peopl actually know what he may or may not be guilty of. But if you had the life that he had, it would be a rare thing to come out on the other end without needing some serious counseling, medication, and more likely both. Jackson went went from child to Megastar overnight and was forced to deal with all the pressure, attention and expectation that comes along with it. It's clear he made mistakes along the way, like we all do.

Still unsure how big a deal his career and music was to the world? Check out some of these facts:

  • +300m records sold worldwide
  • Thriller remains the biggest-selling album in history
  • Jackson's is the third most frequent feature in Madame Tussauds museums, being beat out only by Elvis and Madonna (both of whom have six each)
  • Billie Jean was the first video by a black artist to air on MTV.

Guido Beach

Funny, disturbing and brilliant all at the same time. The crazy thing is that they really didn't need to do THAT MUCH editing to make this footage as crazy as it is. No diss to whomever did the editing, but seriously, you didn't need to work that hard on this bad boy.

This came out a while ago but it's still awesome and gives you a realistic look into what it's like to be a Storm Trooper. It's tough work!

Some of my favorite lines:

"Most people would call this the ass-end of space, but I like the small-town feeling you get around here."

"Do you see his ear, how it's cut like that? It didn't get that way by itself, did it?"

"Telling you, ready to shoot 'em both."

Best of Saving Silverman

I watched this movie in college at least ten times. To date, it's the best movie ever made, of any genre. To quote Will Ferrell: if you haven't seen it, go to a store where videos are sold or rented and buy it or rent it and love it.

We...ate her.

Man, I still can't grow hair on my left nut....sucks.

Inside Look - Google vs. Microsoft - Bloomberg

Google is planning to run its Android system on both computers and phones, taking them deeper into head-to-head battle with Microsoft for the OS market. It sounds like it'll be a very interesting upcoming shopping season for electronics as retailers like Best Buy will now be able to offer competing products that carry one of these systems and observe how consumers respond to traditional and more expensive systems like Windows, in comparison to newer, more affordable albeit potentially buggy (if that's even possible) systems like Android.

Do You Remember Tiananmen?

I was 9 years old when the Tiananmen protests took place, and not yet old enough to realize the horrific and dramatic importance of the events that unfolded 20 years ago today. 300,000 soldiers of the People's Liberation Army were sent to quell tens of thousands of pro-democracy student protesters; violent clashes resulted that had ripple effects around the world. The Chinese Red Cross unofficially reported 2600 dead, though the official Chinese government figure is 7,000 wounder and 241 dead (including soldiers).

Above are the first two parts of Antony Thomas' documentary, The Tank Man, which detailed the Tinanamen square protests and the man behind the now iconic image of bravery in the face of certain death. To watch the remaining parts, simply search "The Tank Man" on YouTube.

Hulu TV Ads lure Away TV Viewers: CEO Jason Kilar Interview

Hulu video site backed by Fox, NBC Universal and ABC, has spent millions (USD) on traditional TV ads to lure viewers away from TV and to their site Hulu.com. In a recent interview at the 4As Leadership Conference, CEO Jason Kilar said Hulu's Super Bowl ad was directly responsible for increasing the online video portal's business by 49%. Also, curiously, Mr. Kilar indicated that his company Hulu neither has or wants a marketing department.

For as much time as I spend on YouTube, I'm confident that I'd spend the same if not more time on Hulu if they streamed outside of the US. It's probably a good thing that they don't actually.

For those that missed their Super Bowl Ad, you can check it out here.

CéU performing Lenda and Malemolencia

"Lenda"

I only just fell in love with this lovely Brazilian singer that I happened across while channel flipping one lazy Sunday afternoon but I cannot get enough of her now.

Going by the stage name Céu, which means "sky" and "heaven" in Portuguese), Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças was born into a musical family and raised in Sao Paolo Brazil. Her sound is a blend of numerous influences, which including samba, valsa, choro, soul, rhythm and blue, hip hop, afrobeat and electronic jazz.

Her debut album Céu released in 2007, earned her critical acclaim and a loyal jazz following the world-over. Enjoy!
