TRAILER: Carriers

Is it just me or does it seem like there's an inordinate amount of doomsday movies coming out recently? I'm curious if everything happening with the the War on Terror, the financial crisis, swine flue and everything else is increasing our desire for escapeism, which Hollywood is cashing in on?

Hong Kong Social Media Discussion

I'm participating in a panel discussion on social media today in Hong Kong, sponsored by MRM Worldwide. I've been doing quite a bit of research to understand the risks, rewards and strategies for brands considering social media as part of their marketing mix. Ultimately, I think the discussion is very similar to that of how campaigns become viral. Social media isn't worth much if impressions remain low; but it definitely becomes worth something (good, bad, unsure) once an element of it becomes viral.

My recommendation to brands is to get on Facebook, YouTube and Answers first and see where that takes you. And contrary to others, I do believe it's possible to dip your toe in the water with these platforms if you have the right person in charge of the campaigns. Social media is NOT the end-all-be-all; it's simply another part of the online marketing equation. So take it slow and steady and learn to walk before you consider running.

Below are some interesting clips for those interested in this topic:

Lauryn Hill + Wyclef performing Sweetest Thing plus Freestyle

Lauryn Hill - one of my favorite voices from the late 90s and really from all time. Her voice was something out-of-worldly, with incredible range and texture. This is a great rendition with a little freestyle in the middle. Enjoy!

Barney Frank Takes On Protesters At His Town Hall

There be some crazies in the US right now! I really don't know enough about Obama's health care policy to argue yay or nay for it, but regardless I do know that we need to pass some kind of health care to get some serious medication to people who very clearly need it, as this video will highlight.

I really think there should be some sort of test to be able to attend a public debate - sort of an intelligence test but not necessarily an academic one. Maybe a test of rationale to be able to tell the crazies apart.

Best of Big Lebowski

Just had the pleasure to see this again on TV the other day. Thanks to Hong Kong HBO censoring, every F-bomb was edited out. How can it even be the same movie???? Surprisingly, it was still funny, but not nearly the same thing. Anyways, here are some of the best scenes for your enjoyment.

LETTERMAN: Sondre Lerche - To Be Surprised

Sondre Lerche is a critically acclaimed Norwegian musician with a decent fan base, but his big break came when he was asked to score the soundtrack for Dan in Real Life from 2007. I loved the movie and the soundtrack was one of the main reasons. See it if you're a music and/or a Steve Carrell fan. Watch the trailer here.

CBS: The World Of Micro-Loans

According do Wikipedia, microlending is defined as the extension of very small loans (microloans) to those in poverty designed to spur entrepreneurship. These individuals lack collateral, steady employment and a verifiable credit history and therefore cannot meet even the most minimal qualifications to gain access to traditional credit. Microcredit is a part of microfinance, which is the provision of a wider range of financial services to the very poor.

The site mentioned in this piece is MicroPlace; check it out here.

Radiohead - Blow Out

Wow - this concert was 15 years ago - crazy to think that Radiohead's been around for that long. Thom Yorke seems almost normal when he intros the song in the beginning of the clip.

COVER: God Bless The Child

"Would you first believe that I first fell in love with this song listening to a tape release of "GREATEST HITS FROM THE SIMPSONS"??? I remember it was a track where Lisa is singing this while jamming on her now famous saxophone. There is something to be said for children/young-adult music that incorporates oldies but goodies into the fold.

Brüno's 'Terrorist' Speaks Out

I saw Bruno while on vacation (which I enjoyed immensely). One of the now famous scenes is where he supposedly sits down with a "terrorist" to ask to be kidnapped in the hopes that it will make him famous. It is pretty funny the way it appears in the movie but I'm disappointed to think that the entire thing was staged and in fact largely invented/edited. It does not take away from the fact that the movie was much more hilarious and offensive than the trailer lets on.
